1) "The Chain" - by Fleetwood Mac
Picture this, you are sleeping, suddenly you sit up straight, the track begins, your eyes open. I woke up with a song playing in a my head. I am not talking about a distant hum, not the mumblings of a vocalist and not some faint guitar solo but loud and clear words backed up by fantastic music. The experience was surreal. I could see and feel the world going about its work at its characteristic frenetic pace, but I was in suspended animation.
This song comes from Fleetwood Mac's worldwide best selling Rock album titled Rumours. The album, released in 1977, got immense commercial success and went 5 times platinum. The quality and success of the album can be gauged from the fact that it won the Grammy Award for 'Album of the Year' (1978). It is regarded as one of the top 15 albums ever made.
The song is unique since it was written collectively by all members of the band. A phrase from the song - "Never Break the Chain" - went on to become a signature for the band.
It is interesting to note that final section of the song, which involves a bass progression, was intented to for an entirely different song. The lyrics of the other song did not fit, but the music worked out just fine. This final portion was used by BBC for their coverage of F 1 races as the opening theme on the show Grand Prix. Verses of this song were used by rap artists Bone Thugs-n-Harmony in the song "Wind Blow" from their album Strength and Loyalty, and the rap version is a popular song on the FM airwaves.
